Mountain bike club launched
23 Feb, 2012 10:23 AM
A MOUNTAIN bike club has been formed to further develop the local trail network.
About 35 local mountain bikers and cyclists decided to form the club and link it to the Collie Cycle Club rather than the South West Mountain Bike Club.
The meeting at which the club was formed was organised by prominent cyclist Erik Mellegers and local rider Aaryn Johansen.
Mr Mellegers said there will still be co-operation with the South West Mountain Bike club.
“A steering committee has been set up to formalise the mountain bike club format under the Collie Cycle Club banner,” he said.
“It is basically to go through the procedural paperwork and administration for the Collie Cycle Club to become affiliated with the Australian and international mountain bike associations.”
From here a Collie Cycle Club sub-committee will be set up to oversee the development of mountain biking in the region.
“The club is moving to grow the mountain bike trail network in Collie in association with the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) and other interested stake holders,” Mr Mellegers said.
“It will promote mountain biking in the local area with participation events followed by barbecues and get-togethers.”
Anyone interested in knowing more about the club can contact Mr Mellegers or Mr Johansen by visiting Crank’n Cycles or calling 9734 1471.

The SW club and Collie mtb riders are working together to secure a grant thru DSR for a detailed mountain bike trails master plan for the Collie Shire.
The SW club are putting an application for a $15000 grant.
Once the Master trail plan is completed for Collie, it will allow a more flowing operation of structured trail building to be phased in over the years.
All age groups and disciplines of riding will be accomodated, along with the necessary facilities for any future trails/events/riding.
The trails grant and master plan is supported by :
Collie shire
MLA Mick Murray
SW MTB club
Collie Cycle club
DEC
DSR
It was decided to work together quickly to get the application in before the March 16th deadline of DSR trails grants.
Permalink Reply by John Wallace on February 24, 2012 at 4:08pm Due to the demand of Mountain Bike trail use in the Wellington DEC(Collie, Dardanup area) district and the increasing number of clubs and groups seeking ownership of trails. A Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU)is being written to set out some clear understanding for clubs and land managers for mountain bike activity on DEC managed land.
The partnership will include:
DEC
SWMTBC (Pile rd/lower collie river valley)
Collie Club (Collie/Upper collie river valley)
Peel District Mountain Bike Club (Wellington Mills down hill center)
The document is a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) and is not intended to create binding or legal obligations on eany of the partys The purpose of this MOU is to outline the roles and responsibilities of the respective parties for the development and management of mountain bike use and maintenance of mountain bike trails within Wellington DEC district.
.
Is this going to be a state dominating new hub for mountain biking?
I hear the numbers of people willing to be involved are making it look promising
