Recently I have purchased a Garmin E Trex HC series personal navigator. The unit incorperates a Digital compass, Track log, Altimeter, Trip computer and all kinds of other little quirks to make its use more and more fun every time you flick the switch.
This little gadget only takes up 159g of your carry space and works between -15 and 70 degrees c. So it makes either scaling MT Everest or navigating the salt pans of Africa no problem. It almost seems as though your body will be giving up before this little bugger.
I used the compass last night and the back lighting  gave this device a little extra over the Lensatic type compasses used in the past. The days of holding your torch in your mouth while checking your bearings are gone due to the new head lamp LED technology, though i still think its cool.
When you get home you can load up your trip and way points and mach them in with photos to make a nice little journal of events, to keep for yourself or even pass on to your friend to check out.

I am still figuring out how to get its full potential cranking but am mostly pleased with what I get out of it.
It can be used riding, driving, riding or walking as it has different mounting devices can be sourced for use in many different situations. I am just happy to keep it clipped on and in my pocket, and don't mind the splash of creeks and river crossing cause it doesn't mind getting a bit wet.

Have you thought about taking up geocaching, that will give your new toy a true workout.

I have a Garmin 60csx and love it.

Cheers
I always take my GPS with me on the trails.
However I have got seriously lost once when it ran out of batteries.
I actually got off the trail and was exploring thru the bush in a flat area.
very overcast day *no shadows*
GPS ran out of batteries, and there was no way I could tell what direction was which.
I knew If I walked in a straight line, I would come across a track of some type.
Unless you are walking paralell with a track. lol
yes indeed I must give this Geocaching a try. I can't really comment on something I haven't yet had a crack at.
Am still learning all the goodies to play with but am confident I will ready to go searching in the bush soon.

Hehe... John I would advise you pack some extra batteries next time as I also have been caught out in the bush with a few tinnies and nowhere to go. Good fun though. A couple of double jeez and 3kms of fence line to find a familiar trail on that particular day.

Chris I have a Garmin Dakota 10 and love that I can just follow my nose without the stress of getting lost!  I am still getting the hang of mine too but I'm really interested in how you can upload your way points and match them with photos with your E Trex.  How do you do that?

Hi Gabby, I have still no idea at the moment on maching way pionts to photos. I will be finding this out though as it will be handy for some of the project I am planning.

Hi Chris

Do you know you can load the OSM map  into it which is free and routable? The Collie area is well covered by OSM.

I think you've got a right GPS one. Thanks...Sport Flooring Queensland
