Into Mountain Biking? Have your say in this survey re. trails in the Meelup Regional Park

From Richard Renn, Secretary Cape Mountain Bikers:

I am pleased to announce that the decision to allow mountain bike riding within the Meelup Regional Park (located right next door to Dunsborough) is now within reach. See Concept Map for details. Bike Riding is proposed for the Orange 'Cycle Trails' and Green 'Multi Use Trails'.

The Meelup Regional Park management committee in conjunction with the Shire of Busselton are ready to allow bike riding on these trails once the community have had their say. The Community Consultation Survey is NOW OPEN for ALL to provide feedback whether you are a local or sometimes visitor to the area.

We need as many mountain bikers as possible to complete the survey. Everybody that can provide a balanced opinion should be encouraged to participate. The more the better.

The survey closes at 5pm Monday 29th August.

Click here to take the survey.

Then send an email to survey@capemountainbikers.asn.au with Survey Completed in the subject field to let us verify the results.

See below for the feedback following the recent Meelup Regional Park survey.

Dear all

First of all, thank you for taking the time to complete the survey about the First Stage Concept Plan for Meelup Regional Park, which proposes to allow bikes on ‘bike’ and ‘multi-use’ trails in the Park. We had nearly 250 responses from both local and non-local people; 82% of respondents cycle regularly in the Park and 97% of respondents supported the plan.

The Meelup Committee recognises the growing pressure from mountain bike enthusiasts to be allowed to use the Park for this purpose, and the Committee’s main imperative is to ensure that recreational use of the Park does not impair its environmental values. The survey was developed in order to gauge the wider community’s response to the Concept Plan that was developed in partnership with the local Cape Mountain Bikers club as an agreeable first stage.

At this stage, the Shire of Busselton Reserves Local Law states that bike riding is illegal in Shire reserves unless express permission is given. At a meeting earlier in November, the Meelup Committee endorsed a recommendation to support: a Council report to the Council be presented recommending a determination to the Local Government Local Property Law (2010), to allow bike riding in Meelup Regional Park as per the First Stage Concept Plan.

It will take some time to go through the whole process to change the Law, so please note that if you are stopped for riding a bike in the Park you may be liable for a fine of up to $200. The whole purpose of working with the CMB and the Shire is to ensure we come up with a plan that is sustainable and where bike use is managed, whilst also providing a good experience for trail users.

Thanks again for your input.

Kind regards

Mandy Polley
