I am planning to do the Great Walk from O'Reillys to Binna Burra over Easter.  So far it is a nightmare to plan.

Has anyone had any experience with this track?

The maps QLD Parks give you links to dont show you the Great Walk or the campsites.  All they show is all the other tracks like the Border Track etc.

I will be driving to my start point and walking the 54 kms to the end to complete the track.  But it seems there is no way of getting back to the start point (no buses, shuttles etc).  So any ideas how I get back to the car?

I will going to the map shop on Saturday to see if any guidebooks exists etc.  And will contact QLD Parks but so far my enquiries have prompted fairly broad replies.

Thanks

I have camped at Binna Burra, which is a great place, and the walks, bush and wildlife are fabulous. However there were no links between the two places apart from walk trails, and the entrances to O'Reillys and Binna Burra each come in from a different end of the Lamington National Park. So I am not sure there is any easy answer, but I would not let this put you off your walk, as you may have to walk in and out. Most maps I had at the time from the Qld Parks people were pretty basic and to my knowledge there were not any campsites any where in the Laminton National Park. The only place you are supposed to camp is Binna Burra.

Thanks for the reply - looks like it will have to be an out and back walk.  I'm off to buy some maps on Saturday so will have to see where I can explore.  I am happy to bush camp, so could be that I will need to do this to maximise the experience.

Hopefully I can post some pics and comments post walk on this site.

I have no maps and no transport information as when I walked it in the late 60's I was dropped at one end and collected at the other with any maps dissapearing years ago. It was pristine then so I hope you find it in the same state.

I would give you at least one warning, West Australians are generally unfamiliar with leaches with the exception of a few in the Kimberley. Be prepared for leaches, dropping from trees, crawling over boots and gorging on your blood til they are the size of your little finger. Carry salt.

I seem to recall a detailed article in a past WILD on this walk. I will fight my way down to the back shed today, wrestle the tiger snakes and see if I can find the appropriate issue. If you don't hear back the tigers won or I don't have the issue.

Transport on through walks is always a big problem. I understand and am always willing to assist anyone that has that problem down our way.

cheers

Are you saying you live near Lamington NP?

I bought the maps and decided that best bang for my buck is to check out the various walks inside the NP than do the Great Walk itself.  The Border Track and those tracks that link in should do the trick!

I encountered the leeches when I did the Great Walk (Hinterlands) - see image attached.

I subscribe to WILD - so if the feature was anywhere from about issue 95 onward - I may a copy myself.

Thanks the info

PS: Im sure the park has changed since the 60s...that is 50 years ago!  You are showing your age Alex!

No, I am between Nornalup and Mount Frankland (on my Icon).

I didn't make the shed yesterday but I will have WILDs going back before issue 95.

I was young in the 60's

OK, I found one aticle which in the ilk of many WILD yarns didn't contain a lot of useful information, but rather to entertain lounge room walkers. It is titled " Misadventures at Green Mountains" WILD89 winter 2003. they do have a WILD style scetch map that shows where they camped and the route between Christmas Creek and O'Reillys including the Stinson Wreck.

I think the reason you can't locate a "The Great Walk" map is that the walk is actually a combination of a number of other named tracks.

There may also be the option to forget your car and use other transport to O'Reillys and from Binna Burra or vice versa.

From/to Binna Burra by private limo is $88 for 1 to 4 people to or from Nerang rail Station. (2011 price)

The Mountain Coach Company operate a round trip day tour to O'Reillys for $69 but will provide one way transport to from Gold Coast. (2011 price)

Hope that helps..
