Hi everyone,

I'm keen to get some hiking poles - but many are sooo expensive!  Anyone got any tips for a brand that's lightweight, telescopic, strong - and affordable??

cheers

Linda

Hi Linda,

Consider looking at LEKI, they have a good name in the market, light (depending on model), and still affordable.

I have used a pair of LEKI Super Makalu for several years now.

Cheers
Mark
Thanks Mark - much appreciated :)
Hi Linda,
Gee I just got a pair from Rangers cost me $50.00 they are telescopic I dont think they are heavy and they work really well for me....

Karen
Thanks Karen - I'll check them out.

G'day Linda,

I am not a pole person myself but have two walking companions in the east that I have walked many hundreds of km with since they got into poles. They are both big blokes so that will be an indicator of the strength of the poles if nothing else. I was so impressed I purchased a set for my wife Sherrill but she is yet to use them. They are Black Diamond "Switchbacks" I seem to recall paying around $120 0r $140 for the pair from PP in Ringwood (Melbourne). They are 290gms each according to my kitchen scales and collapsed length is about 64cm.
Not sure they are still available as that model, they may have been renamed/replaced.

regards
Alex
Thanks Alex - that gives me a good guide to go by.
cheers, Linda
Hi Linda,
I am currently testing the Leki Khumbu Aergon Trekking Poles.
They are a speed lock as opposed to the twist lock system.
It has an external adjustment system. Very easy and quick to operate.
They come in at 602 g for the pair, say 300 g each
The cost for the pair are Us$99.95

Ralph
Hi Ralph, Can I ask where you got them from? I notice it was $US so wondered if it was online - and if so, which site.
cheers
Linda
Linda,
They were sent to me directly by Leki to test.
Go to their website and find out who their reps are. See http://www.leki.com
The hyperlink does not appear to work as I sent the report link and it did not show.
Try this Tiny URL : http://tinyurl.com/2fw5rvx
It should go to my report.
To date I am very happy with them. Used them over the last three weeks and will be using them again on Sunday around Eagle Hill helping with an Introductory Walk.
Thanks Ralph!
hi Linda

do you plan on using them locally only or also when travelling?

The reason i ask is that i hv previously used Leki Makalus and recently purchased the Super Makalu and i found that the Super Makalu doesnt collapse as small as the Makalu's did. They were much more difficult to store in my bag on a recent overseas trip so that is something you should bear in mind if you intend to travel with your trekking poles..

cheers
Jeelan
Hi Jeelan
Thanks for your input - I've just bought the Leki Makalus and will be taking them to NZ. Looking forward to a test run soon - apparently it takes a while to get used to using poles!
cheers
Linda
