Long Trail, Vermont, USA

This year had the fortune to tour Canada, Alaska and Vermont in August and September. While in Vermont we chose to do part of the Long Trail. The Long Trail is a 272 mile (438 kilometres) long walking trail through Vermont USA. It is the oldest long distance trail in the USA. It was built between 1910- 1930s. It actually coincides with the Appalachian Trail for 100 miles.

The trail follows the Green Mountains and we did the section around Mount Mansfield near Stowe. The first part of… Continue

Bibbulmun Track end to end, our story

Bibbulmun Track 20 September – 21 November 2009

Daphne and Lennard

What went ahead

Somewhere during our internship in 2003 in Sydney (or Sidney in Dutch, but that looks awfully awkward) we heard of the Bibbulmun track for the first time. Back then we only had less than 3 months to travel Australia after we finished our research. We did some hiking in Wilsons Promontory, Katherine Gorge (mainly canoeing) and other places, but we didn’t consider doing the… Continue

Importance of Walking

1 Walking 20 minutes can add to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $7000 per month.
2 My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60... Now he's 97 years old and we haven't a clue where the hell he is.
3 I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.
4 I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I'm doing..

Kangaroo spotting on the Bibb Track

Took a friend from the UK for a walk to Hewett's Hill campsite yesterday - and we were lucky enough to see two HUGE kangaroos. They bounded across the track a few metres in front of us and we had a great view as they dissappeared into the bush. Sadly, we didn't spot any red-tailed black cockatoos.

Yanchep National Park

The trails around Yanchep National Park are open again. They were closed after wildfires ravaged the area around a year ago. The bush is regenerating and the new, bright green foliage is a stark contrast against the blackened tree trunks on the Ghost House trail. An excellent short walk (wheelchair and pram friendly) is the Dwerta Mia walk trail which takes you through an old collapsed cave system. The kids loved this trail - it looks like dinosaur country and feels mysterious.

Paddle around Molloy Island

Had such an awesome morning in the new kayaks paddling around Molloy Island on the Blackwood and Scott Rivers.
The new boats are getting a great work out - but not 2uite as much as my poor old arms!
Can't wait for the next paddle...

Day 2

Well I'm still here!!!!!

Who would of thought I'd be back writing on day 2. Certainly not me - but you know, I surprised myself!! I kept up, I wasn't too puffed, and after the initial stress actually enjoyed it - particularly after I got past the 2km sign ;)

Today was a gorgeous walk through the south west coastline, the tracks are easy going, the views are incredible and all in all I'm enjoying it far more than I thought I would.

Day 1 of our Cape to Cape walk

well the adventure began today, we were dropped off at our starting point on Bussell Highway, the entrance to Gracetown - it wasn't until all the gear was actually on my back that I started to wonder - what on earth possessed me to agree to this !

I had promissed myself I would do an hours walking a day for three months leading up to this walk, as I hadn't done any excercising for years. But! I didn't do anything! - now I was beginning to stress.

My brother in-law (ex SAS)… Continue
